Rhee Lab Outreach

In addition to performing scientific research, members of the Rhee Lab are engaged in a number of community outreach projects that we create, plan, and execute. While some of these projects focus on a specific demographic, such as our Virtual Classroom Visits program, others such as Science on the Screen extend to a broader audience and welcome participation from the general public. Information about current outreach activities and events can be found below.

Science on the Screen

Through shared screenings of thought-provoking movies and follow-up Q&A sessions, we created a casual forum for the general public to interact with us to break stereotypes about scientists, clear up misinformation, and gather to learn more about science.

Designing Videogames using Plant Science

We believe in the importance of educating the general public about plant science. Rather than using only traditional means of education, we have taken it upon ourselves to try something new and fresh: developing video games with the goal of teaching about plant biology. From learning about plant transformation to CRISPR to an ordinary daily routine of a scientist, our games will invite you into the fascinating realm of plant science where you can actively enjoy yourself as you learn.

Plant Cell Atlas Art and Science Exhibit

We are hosting portable art and science exhibits at Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic Serving Institutes, and Primarily Undergraduate Institutions to raise awareness of the impact that plant research can have on society, the environment, and the economy. These exhibits take the forms of 4 banners centered around a plant science topic per exhibit, which lasts for one semester or 2 quarters. The inaugural exhibit, showing in Fall 2021, features historically significant Black figures in plant science with short biographies of each scientist and art that highlights their research. The second exhibit in Spring 2022, will focus on impressive feats of plant biotechnology such as phytoremediation and vaccine production in plants.

Popular Science Essays

Throughout the years, members of the Rhee lab have written popular science essays with the goal of sharing knowledge and engaging the general public with the world of plant biology. These have covered topics such as the Tree Spotlight Series, a partnership with canopy.org, as well as biopics on important plant scientists.

STANFORD LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
“Stanford sits on the ancestral land of the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe. This land was and continues to be of great importance to the Ohlone people. Consistent with our values of community and inclusion, we have a responsibility to acknowledge, honor, and make visible the University’s relationship to Native peoples.”
